Beer from Stralsund – famous at Hanseatic time

history and tradition

History of the Störtebeker Braumanufaktur

Stralsund: one of North Germany's most important Hanseatic cities.

During the time of the Hanseatic League, beer exports to Denmark and Norway played an especially key role in the city's success. Ships from Stralsund even sailed as far as England to supply its ports with beer and malt. Because the beer was particularly flavoursome and, thanks to the use of hops, long-lasting, demand for it grew continuously. Stralsund beer was famous far beyond the city limits – and brought the city increasing levels of wealth.

1862: mention in the local newspaper, the Sundische Zeitung.

What was then the Stralsund Cooperative Brewery (Stralsundische Vereinsbrauerei) reports on the "acquisition of a patented pressure machine". This so-called Linde cooling machine made it possible to serve beer directly from the ice cellar. This was sensational technological progress at the time, because the beer was always cold, properly preserved and of impeccable quality. To meet the growing demand, the brewery additionally purchased the plot by the Greifswalder Chaussee. Here, the multi-storey brewery building was erected in 1899.

Rediscovered after Reunification: the old recipes.

The Stralsund Cooperative Brewery luckily remained unscathed by allied bombing during World War II. Yet the disassembly of the facilities for reparations payments, and then having to brew under the conditions of the socialist planned economy, resulted in an extreme deterioration in beer quality. Only after Reunification did the brewers return to the old recipes and start the journey towards craft brewing.

From a conventional brewery to a craft brewery.

In 2010, we began forging a new path. Today we do what we do best: We brew a great variety of top-quality beers, drawing on Hanseatic brewing traditions. To reflect this change, the brewery was renamed Störtebeker Braumanufaktur ('craft brewery') in 2011. At the same time, we developed a variety of offerings to help our customers discover beer in wholly new ways. This includes tasting sessions, sommelier evenings and much more.
