press release 11/09/2011

Our beers are some of the best of its kind.

Another victory for Störtebeker Braumanufaktur: At the European Beer Star 2011 (www.european-beer-star.de), Europe’s largest beer competition, Störtebeker’s dark beer won the category of “German-Style/Dark Beer”, thus repeating its success in the previous year. The award ceremony took place today in Nuremberg at the "Brau Beviale" (www.brau-beviale.de), the world’s largest trade fair for the brewing and beverage industry.

Last year, the Störtebeker brewers won in three categories and were crowned European masters of the best brewery as a result.“ It was clear that it would not be possible to repeat such a coup,” remarked Markus Berberich, the managing director. “But by winning with our Störtebeker dark beer, we have nevertheless demonstrated that our beers can win international competitions, and they are therefore some of the best of their type.”

The awards of 2011.

The European Beer Star 2011 was characterised by the growing numbers of beers from around the world to be evaluated, the high concentration of quality and increasing creativity. This year, the deserving winners were Birrifico del Parma from Italy and the Pelican Brewery from Oregon, which won two categories each.

For the first time, Markus Berberich, beer sommelier and master brewer was included on the European Beer Star adjudicating panel. In this capacity, as part of a team of 100 tasters, he was responsible for awarding prizes to English and Belgian beers.

At the European Beer Star competition, the beers are purely evaluated according to sensory criteria: colour, smell, froth and flavour. All beers are tested in a blind taste tests by a panel composed of master brewers, beer sommeliers and acknowledged beer experts. In this year’s competition, 1,113 beers from 39 countries competed against each other in 49 different categories. The blind taste tests took place on 7 October in the Doemens Academy in Gräfeling, Bavaria.
